Etsy.com artist, Edge of the Wildwood , has featured us on her blog! She has featured one of the pine needle baskets that's currently for sale in our shop. Wildwood does spectacular pyrography (burn etching) and has many beautiful pieces for sale in her Etsy shop, Wildwood.

Thank you, Carey! We really appreciate the feature!

Hitty Doll Sweetgrass Basket

Dave has made several Hitty dolls in the past, and for lovers of the book "Hitty, Her First Hundred Years" by Rachel Field, this basket will be familiar as Hitty spent quite a bit of time hidden in a similar one. If you have never read this book, you should! It is quite the adventure story for young and old alike! This basket measures about 6 inches in diameter and about 3 inches in height. The portrait of Hitty on the lid was done using pyrography (burn etching) and painted. The book shown in the photos is not included and is for display purposes only.

This basket is currently for sale in our Etsy.com shop. If you would like to view this item, please click the link below.

Carved Acorn Frig Magnet

Made with love on Grizzly Mountain!

Dave made this beautiful acorn magnet out of a beautiful piece of cedar, then burn-etched the detail on the acorn's cap. This little acorn measures about two inches in length by an inch and a quarter wide.

We use rare earth magnets in all of our refrigerator magnets which will hold much more than the usual crafting magnet.

This acorn magnet is for sale in our Etsy shop for $7.50. If you'd like to view this item, please click the link below.

"Lady with Flowers" Cameo Needle Minder

We made this graceful "Lady with Flowers" cameo needle minder from a gorgeous vintage inspired resin cameo. The needle minder measures about 1 1/2" in length by 1 1/4" wide. We inlayed a rare earth magnet on the back. Dave inlayed another rare earth magnet into a beautiful piece of Walnut that he turned on the lathe. Together, these beauties will "mind" your needle conveniently on your project! You could even take off the "minder" and use this as a frig magnet.

Rare-earth magnets are strong, permanent magnets made from alloys of rare earth elements. Rare-earth magnets are substantially stronger than ferrite or alnico magnets, so you'll need to keep this away from your credit cards or pacemaker.

This needle minder is currently for sale in our Etsy.com shop for $10.00. If you'd like to view this item, please click the link below.

Hand Painted Porcelain Needle Minder

Being a scrimshaw artist, it is probably obvious that Dave likes to work in miniatures. He hand crafted this unique porcelain OOAK 2 piece magnet needle holder and hand painted a lighthouse scene on it with Porcelaine paint. To firmly bond the paint, the disc is oven baked at 300 degrees. The back piece also has a rare earth magnet inset into a turned Rosewood finger grip for pulling the two pieces apart.

Rare earth magnets are about 8 to 10 times stronger than regular craft type magnets. Keep this needle holder away from your computer, credit cards and pacemakers.

This hand painted needle minder is currently up for auction on Ebay.com. If you would like to view this item, please click the link below.

Scrimshaw Bone Sampler Style Ruler

This delicate little ruler was made especially for the sampler stitchers and collectors. Dave made this little bone ruler in a sampler style. This is rigid bone, about 1/16 inch thick, not thin and flexible like the rulers made from piano keys. The alphabet, flowers, markings and poem are all scrimshawed in the bone.

The poem that is scrim'd on the back is also by Dave.

This ruler is currently up for auction on Ebay.com. If you would like to view this auction, please click the link below.

Fine Silver Inlay Tatting Shuttle

The classic warm feeling of exoctic wood with the elegance of fine silver. This is a petite shuttle, only 2 1/4 inches long. Dave carved it from Goncalo Alves wood and inlaid it with a fine silver filigree disc, which was made by Jo. Jo uses Silver Precious Metal Clay which she shapes and fires in the kiln at 1650 degrees. The organic clay binders burn away melting the silver particals together into solid 99.9 % pure FINE SILVER. This shuttle has been initialed and dated by Dave.

Goncalo Alves wood grows in the upland forest of many regions from Mexico and Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, and Ecuador.

This shuttle is currently up for auction on Ebay.com. If you would like to view this more photos of this item, please click the link below.

Rosewood, Ivory and Bone Tatting Pick

This tatting pick is new but Dave intended to make it look more like an heirloom, something that perhaps a mother may have passed down to her daughter or granddaughter. It is made of Rosewood with a sharp bone pick. 10,000 year old mammoth ivory was used for the carved accent ring on the slip-on point protector. Like most of the ancient ivory, it shows signs of weather cracks, further adding to its antique look, but it is stable and firmly bonded to the wood. The pick is 3 ¼ inches long and with the protector on, it is 4 inches long.

Dave could not really find a good spot to mark this piece with his initials and date, but we will send along a signed “ABOUT THE ARTIST” information card.

This tool is currently up for auction on Ebay.com. If you would like to view this item, please click the link below.

Moby Dick Tatting Shuttle and Harpoon Picot Hook

It’s a whale of a shuttle ! Moby is carved from bone and is 3 ½ inches long. As an added treat, Dave has included a 5 inch bone picot hook that he carved in the shape of a whalers harpoon.

Unfortunately, Dave has a "copycat" on Ebay who is trying to duplicate his work, so a statement of copyright protection was added to this piece. Dave spent many hours planning and executing this Moby Dick shuttle and picot hook, so it would be a shame for this person to profit from Dave's hard work.

Unfinished Tatting Knotting Shuttle

Here's another new handmade fiber art tool for our "Grizzly Mountain Cache" Etsy shop!

Dave made these wood knotting shuttles and left them unfinished so you can decorate them yourself! These large 5"x 1 5/8" knotting shuttles were used in the Victorian era to make strands of knotted rope that would then be sewn onto embroidery pieces. They were such a status symbol that the ladies would carry them around as a fashion accessory!
