Ambrosia Maple Mini Tibetan Support Spindles with Matching Bowls

This is a new item and wood for Grizzly Mountain Arts!  Each ambrosia maple set is unique and one-of-a-kind.  Unlike spalted maple, which exhibits patterns caused by fungi often softening the wood making it "punky", the unique patterns found in ambrosia maple are caused by boring insects which often leave holes, channels and uniquely colored tracks throughout the wood.  The holes and voids found in some pieces allow for the artistic inlay of materials such as turquoise, brass, copper and silver.

Accompanying each spindle, is one of our originally designed support spinning bowls that combines the efficiency of a ceramic surface with the stability of a wide beautiful wooden base. The ceramic insert measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter, and the gorgeous ambrosia maple base is 2 3/4 inches in diameter and 2 inches in height.

All of the sets shown above have been sold.

While it still features our wide base and ceramic insert, this bowl has been raised with a short decorative spindle. The ceramic insert measures 1 3/4 inches in diameter, and the gorgeous wormy maple base is 2 3/4 inches in diameter and 2 3/4 inches in height. Cork has been added to the bottom of this bowl to keep the wood from scratching other hard surfaces.

Maple and Walnut Acorn Needle Minder

Dave has created the beautiful acorn of this needle minder from maple. He has adorned the acorn using pyrography, or burn etching. Hidden inside the acorn is a rare earth magnet which will "mind" your pins and needles.

Rare-earth magnets are strong, permanent magnets made from alloys of rare earth elements. Rare-earth magnets are substantially stronger than ferrite or alnico magnets, so you'll need to keep this away from your credit cards or pacemaker.

The 2 3/4 inch base was crafted from walnut, and cork dots on the back protect your furniture from scratches.

Medieval Norse Fossil Mammoth Ivory Nalbinding Needle

Dave has carved this 5 inch nalbinding needle from fossil mammoth ivory. This particular piece of fossil ivory had a unique curve that Dave accentuated to make a perfect knitting tool. At the suggestion of some of our wonderful customers who are active participants in the SCA, Dave has tried to create an authentic looking replica of a Medieval tool.  We have photographed both sides of this needle to show the uniqueness of the ancient mammoth ivory.   Additional photos can be found at the Etsy listing for this fiber art tool.

**What is Nalbinding?**

The excerpt below is from Wikipedia and gives an explanation of this ancient art form:

"NÃ¥lebinding (Danish: literally "binding with a needle" or "needle-binding", also naalbinding or naalebinding) is a fabric creation technique predating both knitting and crochet. Also known in English as "knotless netting," "knotless knitting," [1]or "single needle knitting," the technique is distinct from crochet in that it involves passing the full length of the working thread through each loop, unlike crochet where the work is formed only of loops, never involving the free end.
