"Sasquatch" the Big Foot Lace Tatting Shuttle

You can't live near Suttle Lake in the Cascades and not know about Sasquatch!

While making this monster 4 ¼ inch shuttle, Dave was inspired by the legends of Big Foot roaming the wilderness areas of the Pacific Northwest, so he named it the “Sasquatch”.

This shuttle is similar in size to the popular large plastic Tatsy shuttle, but it is made out of Oregon Myrtlewood. Dave has burn etched our Cascade Mountains logo on one side and a “Big Foot” print on the other. It has been initialed and dated by Dave, the maker.

Oregon Myrtlewood is a broadleaf evergreen native to Southwestern Oregon and Northwestern California. Although different, Oregon Myrtlewood has a lot of similarities to the Myrtlewood growing in the Holy Land. Oregon Myrtlewood became popular for making gift items back in the early 1900’s. Oregon Myrtlewood possesses a wide variety of beautiful colors and grain patterns and is noted by many as being one of the world’s most beautiful woods. The colors range from blond to black with many shades of honey, browns, grays, reds and greens in between. Oregon woodworkers have developed a small cottage industry making handcrafted Myrtle wood products and gifts for visitors. Many beautiful gifts and works of art crafted out of Myrtlewood. In the Bible, the Myrtle tree is of special religious significance, representing fertility and life.

Snow on the Mountains

Dave and I took a little weekend trip that lasted until today, to visit our son in Portland.  We had a wonderful trip and saw some beautious scenery driving from the high desert of central Oregon over the Cascades to the big city.  We even learned a new term for fall foilage viewers--did you know the people of Detroit, Oregon call you "Leaf Lookers"? LOL

The photo is of the Three Sisters mountains of the Cascade range.  I snapped this photo just outside of Sisters, Oregon through the windshield, so you may find a bug or two there somewhere.

On the way home, Dave wanted to stop at a specialty woodmill and did he ever find some special pieces of wood!  I think you'll be seeing some fabulous pieces in the future :)

Together, these beauties will "mind" your needle conveniently on your project!

You can find this little beauty in the "Fiber Art Tool" section of our Etsy shop.

Handmade Crochet Hooks

Handmade Birch Crochet Hooks

Dave usually creates highly stylized crochet hooks with ancient ivory and bone carvings to sell on Ebay. I've been asking him to design a line of hooks that we could sell directly to our Etsy customers for under $20 and he's done just that!

The hooks of this new line are made from White Birch, a favorite wood of commercial crochet hook makers for the smooth grain that doesn't snag on your yarn, and for the high tensile strength. They are all 6 inches in length.

Q&A About Imported Bone Tatting Shuttles

Q&A About Imported Bone Tatting Shuttles

Dave tries to never rag on any other shuttles or shuttle makers, but he has gotten a few questions from patrons asking what they can do about the inexpensive imported bone shuttle they bought that has come apart where it has been glued together. He provides the following information from his experience:

"These imported bone post shuttles are held together with modern CA glue or cyanoacrylates [tradenames: Hot Stuff, Zap, Crazy Glue, etc.]. CA glue is great and I use it on wood and ancient ivory however I do not use it to make a bone post shuttle. Why? Bone is not ivory! Ivory is a modified tooth (tusk) and is formed differently than bone. Bone was a living organ within the animal and filled with blood, marrow and fatty acids and oils. The processing of bone includes a "de-greasing" process which requires soaking in a solvent to remove all the grease. If not completely de-greased all the way through, the bone will continue to oooze oil to the surface, even years later. My guess is that the problem some folks are having is maybe the bone material was not completely de-greased. It would be something like rubbing a little vasoline on the 2 surfaces and then trying to stick them together with glue. That won’t work!

If you want to keep your bone shuttle I recommend you pick up a can of liquid Coleman Stove Fuel which is also called "white gas", put some in a mason jar and soak the bone shuttle parts in it for about a month, changing the solvent a couple of times. The white gas is flamable and should be kept in the garage or outside and away from any ignition sources. Once de-greased and dry you can rough up the glue points on the bone with sand paper and re-glue with CA glue.

A couple of years ago I bought a few bison leg bones from a Buffalo Ranch here in Oregon and started the process of cleaning and de-greasing the bone. What a job! What a mess! It seemed to take for ever changing the solvent time after time before I felt all the oils were all out of the bone. I still don’t use the bone for gluing post shuttles, I only use it to make the one piece side shuttles and Lady Hoare shuttles.

Ivory on the other hand is a different story. Fresh ivory may have some natural oils but I do not use fresh ivory. The ancient mammoth ivory I use has been in the ground or ice for over 10,000 years and any oils have long since been leached away and the CA glue works perfect on an ivory shuttle.
One time I did find that some ivory I bought had been polished in a tumbler using a walnut shell medium. While nut shells polished the ivory it left a oil film on the ivory that would not hold glue. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on and I that had to de-grease that lot of ivory if I was going to use any glue.

You have heard the saying that oil and water don’t mix...well nether does oil and CA glue! I just suspect that the imported bone shuttles are more production shuttles for the world market and in production modes sometimes quality control is lacking and short cuts taken.

Hope this helps answer some of those questions. I figured some other tatters might find this useful."

The Bears are Here!

Three Bears Tatting Shuttle Set

A GRIZZLY MOUNTAIN SPECIAL!!!! Sometimes Daves creative moods tend to be more whimsical and with Christmas shopping just around the corner he thought of this special set of tatting shuttles that can only be a GMA exclusive.

Dave has hand crafted this bear family of tatting shuttles out of beautiful Cherry wood, with a Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Baby Bear.

Papa Bear is a larger 4 ¼ inch shuttle styled after the large popular plastic Tatsy shuttle.
Mama Bear is the more common 2 5/8 inch standard shuttle, and Baby Bear is only 2 inches long for smaller projects.

To keep this family together during hibernation periods, Dave picked up an unfinished craft box and embellished it with his own pyrographic artwork. Baby bear (inside top lid) is only allowed to play in the immediate area of the den. He climbs a nearby birch tree to survey the area and keep an eye on what you are working on. On the top of the lid Dave burn etched the GMA Cascade Mountains scene where this bear family lives.

What is Nalbinding? According to Wikipedia , Nålebinding (Danish: literally "binding with a needle" or "needle-binding", also naalbinding or naalebinding) is a fabric creation technique predating both knitting and crochet. Also known in English as "knotless netting," "knotless knitting," [1] or "single needle knitting," the technique is distinct from crochet in that it involves passing the full length of the working thread through each loop, unlike crochet where the work is formed only of loops, never involving the free end. Archaeological specimens of fabric made by nålebinding can be difficult to distinguish from knitted fabric.

Celebrating Another Anniversary!

We'll be traveling to celebrate another anniversary this weekend!

In our former lives, we worked and traveled at the pleasure of the Department of the Interior, more precisely the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Over the course of his career, Dave managed some of the largest game ranges in the United States, with the most recent being Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. We spent six years in Burns, which is located in eastern Oregon and is also known as the "Oregon Outback". This weekend, Malheur NWR will be celebrating it's 100th anniversary as a National Wildlife Refuge and we have been invited to attend!

Also, Rogue Ales has released a Great Egret Pale Ale to commemorate this event!

If you try to contact us via email or Etsy convo this weekend, we will reply as soon as we return on Sunday. Thanks to Hurricane Ike, the motherboard for my laptop is still sitting in Houston.

Happy Anniversary to Us!

September 9, 1978

Where have the years gone??? Dave and I will celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary this coming Tuesday, September 9! The photo above was taken just after we said our "I Do's" atop Elk Mountain, which is located in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Needless to say, we didn't have very many people who were willing to hike several miles up to the top for the ceremony :)

When we picked Elk Mountain as the place to get married, we were both living on the refuge, Dave was a manager trainee and my Dad was the Chief of Law Enforcement. While Dave and I left to tour the U.S. with the government, my family remained in Cache, Oklahoma, so it's a very special sight to see Elk Mountain looming in the distance when we go back to visit.

What do you think about my wedding attire? Don't laugh!! Those high-waisted pants with the "elephant" bell bottoms are coming back in style! Click on the photo for a closer look at the groovy clothes :)

Now, for a little business! Being the geeks that we are, we will have our laptop with us on our anniversary trip--did I mention we're going to RENO!? All three of our shops will remain open and you can purchase as usual. The only difference will be that any items purchased during this time won't be mailed until Friday of next week.

Bone and Box Elder Laying Tool

Dave turned this beautifully colored 5 inch laying tool out of bone and dyed box elder wood.

Bone is LEGAL to ship worldwide. We have been having a problem with someone maliciously reporting this item to Ebay for removal. This person has been reported and the matter is being investigated by Ebay so hopefully there will be no further disruptions.

An Open Letter to Our Unethical Ebay Competitor

It's only on rare occasions that I speak out on this blog about personal matters. This time though I think it's necessary.

Everyone knows how cutthroat and competitive Ebay can be when it comes to selling. We have a competitor (who reads this blog, yes I, Jo, am a geek and track everything) who seems to think reporting our items to have them pulled from Ebay, will lessen the competitive field.

I really hate to burst this persons bubble, but ALL of our Ebay listings are LEGAL. Fossil ivory is LEGAL to ship within the US according to Ebay rules and regulations. Even though it is LEGAL to ship worldwide, Ebay only allows the sale of fossil ivory within the US. Bone items, are LEGAL to ship worldwide.

We are busy now responding to our latest item that was removed which was a BONE laying tool. To the person that turned this item in, did you know that YOU can be removed from Ebay for maliciously reporting an item? Well, you can!

Reporting your competitor's items for malicious reasons is NOT a very good business strategy.

Beware of Orbit Telecom!!

Just a little FYI!

We've been slammed yet again by a fraudulent telecommunications company through Qwest. this time, it is from "Orbit Telecom" who charged our telephone bill $14.95 for a voice mail service we do not use.

After doing a Google search for this company, I found that many other people are experiencing the same thing on their phone bills. I also found a great link where you can report these types of fraudulent companies online via the FCC.

Use this link to reach the online complaint form for the FCC:
http://esupport.fcc.gov/complaints.htm

Double check your latest phone bill and look for a charge from "Orbit Telecom"! Ours was listed under "Enhanced Telecommunications Services".

We've Been Featured!

I logged into my email this morning and found a wonderful surprise! We've been featured in "Rocki's Rock'N Blog"!

Rocki is a kindred spirit that loves to create using organic and earthy elements in her jewelry. My favorite piece, is her "Even Squares Love Peace" artisan hand formed silver pendant necklace. I spent many a day back in the early 70's wearing "Peace" symbols, but none of them were as wonderful as Rocki's handmade metalwork pendants. Rocki also creates beautiful signature "Elfin Earwires" that she sells in her "Rocki's Supplies" shop, along with handmade clasps.

Thank you SO much Rocki, for featuring us on your blog! Oh, and for the record--NO, he does NOT do dishes nor windows! LOL
